Building a Full Card Strategy Game Using AI as the Entire Creative Team
The Challenge
Building a collectible card game normally requires a team of game designers for mechanics and balance, artists for card illustrations, writers for lore and flavour text, and months of playtesting. The goal was to prove that a single developer armed with modern AI tools could ship a deep, polished card game — complete with original artwork, rich lore, balanced mechanics, and a playable tower defense mode — in weeks instead of years. The game needed real strategic depth: multiple species with distinct playstyles, a keyword system that creates meaningful counterplay, multi-dimensional stats (ATK/TECH/CMD/SUP/HP), and a rarity system that rewards collection without being pay-to-win.
The Solution
B3KN (Beacon) is a card-based strategy game set in a sci-fi universe where humanity's autonomous Beacon network has attracted alien civilizations. Every card — its stats, abilities, lore, flavour text, and artwork — was generated and iterated using AI tools. GPT-4 designed the game mechanics, species identities, and keyword system. DALL-E generated all card art using species-specific style guides to maintain visual consistency across 100+ cards. Claude handled lore writing — each of the 5 species has a full encyclopedia covering origin, biology, culture, and death customs. Game balance was achieved through AI-assisted simulation: thousands of hypothetical matchups tested stat distributions until the meta felt fair. The result is two game modes: Beacon Defense (a playable tower defense where your cards become towers) and Beacon Strategy (a turn-based galactic conquest game with hex-grid exploration and PvP tower defense battles).

Universe & Mechanics Design
Used GPT-4 to design the Beacon universe, define 5 species (Terran, Caxion, Vrynn, Haegori, Aught), create the keyword system (Reinforce, Surge, Lattice, Epoch, Void), and establish the multi-dimensional stat model (ATK/TECH/CMD/SUP/HP) with rarity tiers and energy curves.
Card Generation Pipeline
Built an AI pipeline: GPT-4 generates card names, stats, abilities, and rules text. Claude writes lore and flavour text matching each species' voice. DALL-E produces card art using locked style guides per species. Each card goes through automated balance validation before entering the database. 100+ cards across Units, Protocols, and Modules.
Tower Defense Engine
Built the Beacon Defense mode — a fully playable browser-based tower defense game where cards from your deck become towers on a grid. Units auto-attack enemies in range, Protocols fire instant effects, and Modules upgrade existing towers. Wave generation scales difficulty. Guest mode with 10 waves, unlimited for registered users.
Frontend, Polish & Launch
Species pages with full lore encyclopedias, interactive card database with search/filter, card anatomy guide, card flip animations, S3 image hosting, responsive design, and production deployment. The card detail pages show front/back with stats grids, weakness panels, and lore sections.
