The Challenge

A small contracting business runs on six apps and a job going cold in somebody's text messages — one tool to get found, another for quotes, a scheduler, a spreadsheet of crew, an invoicing app, and a separate card reader. Contractn had to collapse all of that into one login covering three jobs: get found (a public trade directory with license and insurance up front), win the work (quote requests that turn into priced estimates), and run the job (scheduling, crew, invoices and getting paid). The hard constraint: build it fast, keep it fully functional on its own, and let it borrow heavy operational capability from a shared platform without becoming dependent on it.

The Solution

Contractn is a Laravel application that acts as a thin-IP tenant of the NOWAITN mesh: it owns identity, the public directory and the commercial relationship, while the mesh runs the operational spokes. Every capability sits behind a contract with two implementations — a local one that works with no platform key, and a mesh-backed one that switches on when a tenant key is present — so the app is fully usable standalone and gains CRM, estimates, scheduling, crew, credentials and payments when connected. Contractors are minted as isolated child organizations on the mesh on first lead. The standout feature is measured takeoff: type a room's dimensions and the system derives priced quantities line by line at the contractor's own rates, renders a scope document with a rolled-up bill of materials, and exposes a branded client portal where the customer pays by card through Stripe Connect at a flat 7% platform fee — no subscription.

Build Process

Phase 1 1 week

Architecture & Directory

Designed the tenant/child-org model and the provider-seam pattern (local vs mesh), and built the public trade directory across 15 trades with license and insurance shown up front.

Phase 2 1 week

Estimates & Takeoff

Built measured takeoff, the estimate workflow at contractor-set rates and margins, the scope document, and the rolled-up bill of materials.

Phase 3 3 days

Portal, Payments & Mesh

Wired the branded client portal with Stripe Connect card payment, and the 10 consumed mesh spokes over MCP and REST behind local fallbacks.

Phase 4 3 days

Hardening & Launch

Passwordless auth, homeowner sealed-bid tenders, end-to-end signup-to-dashboard tests, and production deploy with the mesh verified end to end.

Total: 3 weeks from kickoff to production

Measured takeoff turns room dimensions into a priced, line-by-line estimate at the contractor's own rates

Branded client portal lets customers see the estimate and pay the balance by card via Stripe Connect

Consumes 10 NOWAITN mesh spokes through 12 provider seams — and stays fully functional with no platform key

Public trade directory across 15 trades, with license and insurance surfaced up front

Flat 7% platform fee with no subscription; shipped to production in about three weeks
