The Challenge

Running a pub-quiz night usually means dedicated hardware, an app everyone has to download, or a host tethered to a laptop reading questions aloud. The brief was to make any screen the board and any phone the buzzer: a host opens a game on the venue TV, players scan a QR code and are in — no app, no account, no friction. Beyond hosted nights, the platform also had to run an always-on public game that plays itself, generate fresh questions on any topic on demand, and — the ambitious part — be controllable by an AI agent end to end.

The Solution

Trivia1 is a Laravel platform where every game gets a six-character code and a QR poster; players join in the browser and answer on their phones while a host dashboard drives the rounds. Real-time state is handled by lightweight HTTP polling rather than websockets, which keeps it dead-simple to host anywhere. A host-less clock daemon runs "Trivia Royale," an always-on public elimination game kept lively by bot personas. Questions — or entire reusable banks — are generated through a four-provider AI fallback chain (Groq to Gemini to OpenAI to Anthropic) so generation stays cheap and never stalls on one provider being down. And the whole thing exposes its own MCP server, so an AI agent like Claude can build and run a complete game over roughly forty-four tools.

Built the host dashboard, player client, rounds/teams/timed questions, six-character codes and QR join, with polling-based real-time state that hosts anywhere.

Phase 2 4 weeks

Game Modes & Public Play

Added Classic, Royale and Infinite modes, plus the always-on public Trivia Royale driven by a host-less clock daemon and bot personas.

Phase 3 4 weeks

AI Question Factory

Implemented the four-provider AI fallback chain to generate questions and reusable topic banks, with a token/credit economy for pay-per-use generation.

Phase 4 3 weeks

MCP, Billing & Launch

Shipped the MCP server (~44 tools) for agent control, Stripe billing and Connect payouts for venue revenue-share, and deployed to production.

Total: 16 weeks from kickoff to production
